iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone Duo Buyer's Guide: Which to Choose?

Apple is forcing a tough choice: the iPhone 18 Pro or the iPhone Duo, its first foldable. Both share the A20 Pro chip, but the Duo costs $700 more than the Pro Max. Do you really need a folding screen, or are you paying a premium for compromises?
Context: Apple's foldable gamble
For years, Apple watched Samsung and Google iterate on foldables. Now, with the iPhone Duo, it enters late but with its ecosystem intact. It's not a Pro model—it's a new category betting on productivity and media consumption, not pro photography.
The shared specs and key differences
All three models (iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Duo) share the A20 Pro, C2 modem, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 25W MagSafe. They also match on 120Hz Super Retina XDR displays, Ceramic Shield 2, and IP68. But the differences matter:
- Cameras: The Pro has a Pro Fusion system with 4x telephoto, LiDAR, and 8x optical zoom. The Duo uses a Dual Fusion setup without a telephoto lens, capped at 2x.
- Design: The Pro is aluminum with Face ID. The Duo has a titanium frame, 3D-printed hinge, and Touch ID on the side.
- Display: The Duo offers a 7.6-inch inner screen (1878x2670) and 5.4-inch outer. The Pro Max maxes out at 6.9 inches.
- Weight: The Duo weighs 254g, just 5g more than the Pro Max, but much thicker (11.3mm).
- Battery: Though unspecified, the Duo has two cells and promises battery life similar to the Pro Max, but with higher drain from the large screen.
Analysis: Who wins?
If photography is your priority, the iPhone 18 Pro is unbeatable: its 100mm telephoto and LiDAR make the difference. The Duo, however, is for those who want an iPad mini that fits in a pocket. Yet the $700 premium isn't justified unless you'll exploit multitasking or video consumption. Apple is selling the idea that "Pro" no longer means best, but specialized. And here the Duo stumbles: no Action button, no Face ID, and an inferior camera.
Implications: The future of foldables
Apple has achieved what many feared: a foldable without major performance compromises, but with concessions in camera and biometrics. If the iPhone Duo sells well, we'll see an "iPhone Fold Pro" in 2027. If not, Apple might repeat the iPhone mini's failure and leave foldables to Samsung. The industry watches: will Apple set the standard or be a costly experiment?
Ultimately, the iPhone 18 Pro is for creators; the iPhone Duo, for executives and curious spenders. But do you really need to fold your phone?
