Apple just got its iPhone 18 Pro torn down, and the teardown reveals exactly how the company shrunk the Dynamic Island. YouTube channel REWA Technology shared one of the first disassembly videos, showing the internal changes that make this engineering feat possible.

Context: The Evolution of the Dynamic Island

Since its debut on the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island has been a distinctive but bulky feature. Apple has been seeking ways to reduce its size without sacrificing Face ID functionality. The solution came with relocating Face ID's infrared camera under the display, a technical challenge that required years of research and development.

Teardown Details: How Did They Do It?

REWA Technology's video shows that the Face ID infrared camera is now under the display in the top-left corner. The pixels above the camera have a special pattern that lets infrared light pass through, but the area looks normal from typical viewing angles. Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro features a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture, and in the model with a physical SIM tray, the battery is 4,056 mAh, slightly smaller than eSIM-only models. For connectivity, this model is expected to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 or X85 modem, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the U.S. use Apple's C2 modem.

Analysis: Who Wins and Who Loses?

Apple clearly wins by achieving a cleaner, more efficient design. Users benefit from a larger screen and a more modern aesthetic. However, Face ID component suppliers may face pressure to innovate. The integration of the C2 modem in more models also reduces reliance on Qualcomm, which could affect the company's revenue in the long run.

Implications: What's Next?

This advancement likely paves the way for future iPhones, possibly eliminating the Dynamic Island entirely in later models. The under-display display industry could accelerate its development, and other smartphone makers will follow suit. Moreover, the broader adoption of Apple's C2 modem suggests the company is ready to compete in the wireless connectivity sector.

Apple has once again proven it can redefine hardware-software integration. Is this the beginning of the end for the Dynamic Island?
